Apr 22Healthy Planet, Happy Communities
Every year on Earth Day, we reflect on the importance of keeping the planet healthy, because clean air and water are what communities need to be their best. Practicing environmental sustainability helps to avoid the worst effects of climate change, in turn helping current and future generations to have a vibrant place to call home. For Earth Day 2021, we ask that you reflect on how you can engage with your community to support a healthier environment… all year round.
More Than a Day
Green Hope is Mercy Housing’s environmental sustainability program, helping us to reduce natural resource consumption and waste while creating healthier living environments. Mercy Housing has been busy engaging with residents, employees, and partners throughout the year to ensure that we incorporate sustainable practices.
In 2020, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recognized Mercy Housing for achieving its 20% energy savings goal as a partner in the Better Buildings Challenge. Mercy Housing hasn’t stopped there. We recommitted to the Better Buildings Challenge for the next decade, with a goal of achieving an additional 20% energy savings, because we share HUD’s dedication to taking bold action to prevent climate change. Communities with low incomes, particularly communities of color, are disproportionately affected by climate change. It’s a matter of respect, justice, and mercy to do our part to protect the environment.
