New affordable community provides formerly homeless seniors with stable and service-enriched housing

Officials, residents, and many valued community partners gathered with nonprofit affordable housing developer Mercy Housing California (MHC) to celebrate the grand opening of Burbank Boulevard Senior Housing. Located at the corner of Burbank and Van Nuys Boulevard, this permanent supportive housing community features 54 apartment homes, a community room, and crucial onsite services for residents. It opens at a critical moment for Los Angeles’s most vulnerable seniors.

“Seniors represent a highly vulnerable segment of the homeless population,” said Ed Holder, Vice President of Real Estate Development at MHC. “Seniors experiencing homelessness deserve dignified, permanent housing where they can plant roots as they look toward the future. We are grateful to our partners who share this vision as we work together to help meet this urgent need.”

 

Collaboration Leads to Affordable Housing for Seniors

With this partnership between the City of Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, and MHC, Burbank Boulevard Senior Housing serves as another example of collaboration to provide stable and affordable housing to those most in need in Los Angeles County and represents another positive step forward in Los Angeles’s pursuit of housing for everyone.

“One of the fastest-growing populations experiencing homelessness is our older Angelenos and it is unacceptable that so many of them experience homelessness after a lifetime of work and dedication,” said Mayor Karen Bass. “The 2024 Greater Los Angeles Homelessness count showed that the number of people who moved into permanent housing is at an all-time high and through projects like this, we will continue that momentum and house our senior Angelenos.”

Burbank Boulevard Senior Housing was brought to life thanks to the incorporation of Measure H and Proposition HHH resources, significant investment, and collaboration from public and private partners, including the City of Los Angeles, Council District 4, the Sherman Oaks Neighborhood Council, and others.

Burbank Boulevard Senior Meets City’s Need in Addressing Vulnerable Homeless Population

“I am proud to welcome Burbank Boulevard Senior Housing to Sherman Oaks. This amazing new facility, which was thoughtfully designed with input from local community members, features 54 units of affordable housing for seniors experiencing homelessness alongside onsite resident services and case management operations,” said Councilmember Nithya Raman, who represents Council District 4. “This project is a major milestone in meeting the City’s need to house one of our most vulnerable homeless populations, highlighted by the fact that the building is already fully occupied. I deeply thank Mercy Housing and city and state partners for seeing this project through and look forward to meeting our new residents!”

Senior residents living independently in secure apartments can access supportive services for physical and mental well-being. Additional amenities include a roof deck garden, drought-tolerant landscaping, and underground parking. The universal design elements throughout Burbank Boulevard Senior Housing provide residents with accessible and equitable living space.
